But what does XD mean, when people use it at the end of sentences?  Is it some text emoticon? WHAT IS IT?

I was all confused by it too...

I guess it's like a smiley :)

Only with a mouth all grinny and big :D

And squinty eyes, indicating great mirth. XD

Not for sure but that's what I'm guessing.

Yes, they are correct - it's like the LOL'est form of LOL. Like you've got:

:) = Amused

:D = Grinning, laughing

and then,

XD = LMAO

I think I'm older than you, which is one reason why I was so eager to share the information. It took me a hell of a long time for me to figure it out, and I didn't want you to have to wonder about it as long as I did - who knows how much time we have left?

I haven't heard of that one. I know XD as a kind of camera memory card. These kids though- I watched my younger co-worker the other day play on her computer, doing some actual work and playing on Facebook at the same time, while chatting with several people online and texting someone else on her phone. All I could do was shake my head, man. Back when I was a kid, we passed notes to each other. Written on actual PAPER.

if you listen to the Moth podcast (avail on Itunes), check out the 5/2/08 performance by Adam Gopnick, called LOL. It is wonderful. A father's tale of learning to communicate with his son in this techno age. It is funny & poignant.
